BREAKING NEWS: 15 Days After, ASUP Suspends Nationwide Strike

Polytechnic lecturers have suspended a nationwide strike they started on November 13 over failure of government to meet their demands.
Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) told a press conference in Bauchi that the decision to suspend the strike came at the group’s 14 conference in Bauchi after it reached an agreement and signed a memorandum of settlement and action.

The union has previously met with officials and ministries of education and labour, alongside the National Salaries and Wages Commission, Budget office of the federation, office of Head of Civil service and office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
"While we are not unaware of the government over the years to willfully renege on agreements of this nature with labour unions including ours, it is the considered view of our union that the contents of this MoS be given a chance of implementation particularly as there is a mechanism for monitoring and evaluation embedded in the MoS.
"Our union‎'s congress have been fully briefed  on these developments and I am therefore to communicate the decision of our union to suspend the 15 days old strike  action of our union effective Wednesday, 28th November,2017," he said.
"In arriving at this decision, our union considered the impact of the strike action on the society including parents and students, pleas on the  union by well meaning Nigerians and other stakeholder groups in the sector.
"We want‎ to assure Nigerian public that our struggle shall continue to be focused on the survival of this vital sector and in the same vein express our gratitude to all well meaning Nigerians including members of the media and our members for the support and understanding during this period,” the union added.

ASUP may call off strike next week – Official

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, may call off its 12-day old strike next week, an official has said.
An official of the union, Kola Abiola, who is also the ASUP chairman of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic chapter in Abeokuta, told TURNUP on Wednesday that the decision will be taken in Bauchi when ASUP leaders meet next week to deliberate on their negotiation with the federal government.
“The Minister of Education has met with our leadership and there has been fruitful discussions,” Mr. Abiola said.
“There is a process ongoing for the Memorandum of Understanding to be signed.”
According to Mr Abiola, the union had an emergency National Executive Council, NEC, meeting in Abuja on Monday on how to resolve the crisis.
“I think by the time we call ourselves together again after meeting with the government, when we meet at Bauchi next week, we will evaluate what is on ground and a decision will be taken”.
TURNUP had earlier reported the national president of ASUP, Usman Dutse saying the Ministry of Labour told the union that a memorandum of understanding would be issued to resolve the disagreements.
“But we’ve not gotten one MOU till date and that is why our members say there is no seriousness on the side of the government,” Mr. Dutse had said.
He said the polytechnic lecturers would sustain the strike until the demands of the union are met or an implementable memorandum of action was agreed on.
Meanwhile the President of the National Association of Polytechnic Students, NAPS, Eneji Mohammed, in an interview with TURNUP blamed the incessant strike in Nigeria tertiary institutions on under-funding of the sector.
He said the government should increase budgetary allocation to the education sector in order to avert and reduce industrial actions by the teachers.
“We just resumed from a strike six month ago and we are on another one again. We are not happy with the current situation of education in Nigeria and we are appealing to ASUP to take a good decision so that the strike may be called off.
Because we heard that an MOU was presented to the union by the Minister of Education and Minister of Labour,” Mr Mohammed said.
Similarly, the president of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Chinonso Obasi, said strikes are due to government’s non-implementation of agreements.
“Government prefers to meet the demands of politicians while the demands of those that are building the foundation to groom the future generation is compromised. How can government enter an agreement in 2011, re-negotiate in 2012 and those agreement are yet to be implemented in 2017?” Mr Obasi said.
According to him, the government should prioritise the needs of teachers. He, however, said the lecturers should not always use strike as a means expressing their displeasure to government.
ASUP commenced its strike on November 13 due to the federal government’s failure to fulfil the outstanding agreement made with it.

Federal polytechnic oko wants FG to immortalise Ekwueme

The Federal polytechnic, Oko, in Anambra, has urged the Federal Government to immortalise the first Vice President of the country, the late Dr Alex Ekwueme, for his selfless service to the nation.

The polytechnic’s spokesman, Mr Obini Onuchukwu, made the institution’s position known in statement in Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra on Wednesday.

Onuchukwu said that the management, on behalf of the governing council and entire polytechnic community, expressed shock over the news of the demise of Ekwueme, who founded the polytechnic in 1979 as College of Arts and Science.

According to him, immortalising Ekwueme in acknowledgment of his major role in the nation’s democracy, will serve as a “pat on the back” and a source of encouragement to the community.

The institution noted that Ekwueme would be remembered for his fatherly role and efforts in attracting development to the polytechnic.

“The late icon will also be remembered for his political strength in the entire South-East zone and Nigeria as a whole.

“The news of his demise, which is grievously shocking, has thrown the entire polytechnic community into mourning, especially as the history of the institution can never be told without the name of the late patriarch being mentioned.

“As a true nationalist, late Ekwueme formulated many political ideologies to advance the country.

“His love for his people in particular and the nation in general, gave rise to what is today known as the Federal Polytechnic, Oko.

“We are saddened by the news of his transition at the age of 85 because his wise counsel and tutelage will be greatly missed.

“We have lost a great man. We have lost a father. We have lost a political giant.

“We are in deep shock that it happened at a time like this when growing politicians needed to tap more from the wealth of experience and knowledge of the former Vice President.

“On a different note, the death is also a celebration of a rare gem because the former vice president lived a fulfilled life and laid a good foundation which we all enjoy today.”

He described Ekwueme as “one of the old generation elder statesmen who lived a peace loving life and a man of courage; and we will miss him so much”.

The institution prayed God to give the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

Meanwhile, the polytechnic has opened a condolence register at the institution’s administrative office as a mark of respect for the founder of the institution.

5 Ways to punish girls who come on a date with friends

Some ladies have a very bad habit of showing up on a date with friends, either as a handbag, a battalion, or the entire squad. Some say they do it because they don’t like walking alone, others claim to do it for security, because life is hard these days. Even though you can just be the perfect gentleman and take care of your date and her friends, you can also set up a defense mechanism in place to teach these ladies a lesson they probably will never forget. We have five (5) special ways you can salvage the situation or make these ladies learn a lesson or two for coming on a date with friends.

1. Take up her order and ignore her friend(s). Act like you don’t know them and you don’t care.
This is just what you should do in the situation; the easiest thing you can do. Just be like, “You didn’t tell me you were coming with your friends. I won’t be responsible for them. Are we going to continue with our date or move it for another day?”
That way, she’d know shit just got real. If she however thinks her friends must stay, ask her to share her food with her wonderful friends.
It’s not wickedness, you are just sticking to the original plan of the date.

2. Give her friend(s) all your attention, make them feel very important and leave your main date wondering what happened.
This is going to be vintage! Another way to make her realize she made a huge mistake by coming along with friends on a date with friends. To make it worse for her, you can even start flirting with her friends. Tell them some sweet words that are sure to pierce through your date’s heart. Go as far as taking the number of her friend(s) and make sure your girl sees it.
Don’t worry, you won’t see her friend(s) again on any date. Not even on your wedding day. And you won’t also see her number on your phone again. Your girl would do the needful. Lesson learnt, problem solved, forever!

3. Ask all of them to order to their fill, even make ‘take-away’ plans for them. Then, you run away.
This is one of the more wicked things to do to your date and her friend(s). It might look difficult to achieve because you pay at the counter before taking the food away, but I have a way you can pull the stunt.
When they come, you don’t just go to order immediately. You get familiar first. Then you ask them what they would like. Tell them to feel free and eat whatever. Even make them feel like you knew they would be coming. Ask them to make the order and that you need to either pee/answer a call…or better still, fake call and walk away to look for network. Or tell them you forgot your card in the car. Just get them to go to the counter and fool themselves.
Then, you VANISH!
Not only will your date learn the lesson, the atenu friends will learn too. Next time she won’t come on a date with friends.

4. Run as soon as you see her appear with her friend(s). Abort the date!
This one may look cowardly, but it’s a possible solution for those times when you really don’t have money to cater for anyone more than your date. When you can’t take it on, better to run away and live to fight another day.
So here is how you pull this off. The moment you sight them from afar, put your phone for airplane mode. Find a way to run off from the other side if there is one, or just look for a way to disappear. Call her later in the night, give her an excuse, and complain that the network was fluctuating. Use that money you for spend, buy better fufu and soup. You better spend the money on yourself than on random people.Another way to escape this situation, in case you were caught off guard, and she already appeared with her friends is to fake an ‘important’ call. Step out with your phones and wallet, disappear, switch off your phones!

5. Buy water for yourself and for all of them. What better way to make a statement than to do something they will not recover from in years!Buy only bottled water for all including yourself.

The Nigeria Polytechnic system has being biased in Everything (Must Read for Poly Student)

Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP)

The Nigeria Polytechnic system has being biased in Everything (Must Read for Poly Student)

Deprivation of Mark in Polytechnics
A while ago I was reading the interview with the best graduating student of The University of Lagos, Unilag 2012/2013 and I Laughed.
The reason for my laughter is not far from the obvious. you’ll observed that many best graduating students from our university system claimed to had gotten 5.00 GPA at least once and something kept lingering in my thought which I discovered to be corrected as soon as possible.

The polytechnic system has being biased for so long about anything and everything.
Could you believe that we (polytechnic students) has being “deprived and discriminated of our Marks”?
DISCRIMINATION OF OUR SCORES has being covered until Now and I deem necessary that the leadership of NAPS foster this “Discovery”.
Do you know that In a polytechnic system, it is rare to hear or read about a student having 4.00 Gpa.
To a large extent, it is because our marking skills has being discriminated upon. And this has prevented students who ordinarily merited distinction to have upper credit, those ought to be in upper credit are in lower credit while those to had been in Pass get below pass and are advised to withdraw.

The apparent discrimination is in the complexity in grading our marks.
The classification below will paint a better picture to my claims and further buttress my point;
HOLISTICALLY
Nigeria’s Universities Grading system
SCORE. – Grading. – weighed point
(70-100). – A. – 5
(60-69). – B. – 4
(50-59). – C. – 3
(45-49). – D. – 2
(40-44). – E. – 1
(0-39). – F. – 0

While NIGERIA’s Polytechnics Grading System you will observed that you have A1,AB,B1,BC,C1,CD,D1,P & F each having bisected weighed points opposing that of the university.

What this means is that students in polytechnics cannot have a weighed point of 4.00 point if they have A2(70-74) but in university there is nothing like A2 which is above 70 and equivalent to A1 automatically while the students of polytechnic suffer from grading deficiency. symbolically this happens to grade B,C and D having BC,CD & D against none in the universities.

…Also, By mathematical expression, students in the universities graduates with Pass of 1.50 Cgpa out of 5.00 point which is 30% minimum to graduate.
But that of Polytechnics, students are graduated with pass of 1.50 Cgpa out of 4.00 which is 37.5% minimum to graduate.
Yet we are cheated in the grading system I analysed above and the polytechnics students are made to score a higher minimum of 37.5% than the universities counterpart of 30% else NO Graduation.
WHOSE IS HIGHER?
NAPS Kindly Consider this plea with Alacrity.
yours Pragmatic.
